Review by Admin:Bloody brilliant!
Based on the controversial biography by David Peace, and shunned by Clough's family who have refused to watch it, The Damned United centres its story around Brian's 44 day tenure at Leeds United.
First of all, the central performances from Sheen, Spall and Meaney are wonderfully engaging. And, Broadbent provides his usual enigmatic presence. If, like me, you're familiar with the Clough/Revie rivalry then you will marvel in the accuracy of the portrayals. The jaunty soundtrack mixed with the acute wit of Clough and dogged stoicism of Revie walks the line between reverence and laugh-out-loud hilarity...at least for me.
I can't praise it enough. It's such a fantastic feel-good film. "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the country, but I'm in the top one" |
