Review by Admin:The idea behind The Island is pretty good, the film however, is just another big, dumb, explosion littered offering from 'king' of explosions, Michael Bay.
The Earth is for some reason uninhabitable, so the population live in a utopian society underground. Their only chance to see anything of the glorious planet the human race used to live on, is if they win the lottery. The prize is a trip to the titular Island, the last habitable place on the surface of the planet. Or so they believe.
Lincoln Six Echo (McGregor) starts to have doubts about his surroundings. When he sees a moth fluttering about the place, and after a chat with drink addled employee, McCord( Buscemi), he starts to question his existence with the facility director, (Sean Bean). After a visit inside the workings of the facility, Lincoln discovers that instead of going to the island, citizens are unsympathetically carted off to an unknown fate.
The action is then shoved into top gear and he escapes with Jordan Two Delta, (Johansson). The film then moves into typical Bay territory. Frantic car chases, helicopter chases, (naturally). Bay seems to like chopper chases even more than John Woo.
Enter Djimon Hounsou, as a hunter/assassin, employed by Bean to catch the escapees, before they are discovered by the authorities in the real world outside. Lincoln and Jordan find brief shelter at McCords home. Here they learn that they are clones of other people, The facility is a 'Genetic Farm' for spare parts for the wealthy.
The action sequences are handled well, this is, after all, what Bay does best. The biggest problem lies in the casting, McGregor is a fine actor, sadly he's not an action hero, and ultimately cannot carry the film. Johansson is wasted as eye candy and Sean Bean reprises his off the shelf, by the numbers villain from Goldeneye. Only Djimon Hounsou convinces in his assassin with a conscience role, and Buscemi is as watchable as ever, its a pity his part wasn't bigger.
There are lots of illogical and unexplained events littered throughout. However, golf fans should enjoy it, there are at least 18 plot holes
All in all, big, loud and kinda fun, but lacking in any real adrenalin buzz or full on energy. |
