Review by Admin:Jailed for a crime he didn't commit, Benjamin Barker (Depp) returns to London and takes the name Sweeney Todd. He sets up a barber shop above Mrs Lovett's ( Bonham-Carter) pie shop. Here he plans revenge against those that took away his family and ruined his life.
Johnny Depp is superb in the title role. He sings very well, sounding more than a little like David Bowie. Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs lovett also manages to hold a tune with ease. The supporting players are excellently cast, especially Timothy Spall as the very seedy and sinister Beadle, and Alan Rickmans Judge Turpin is a nicely underplayed villain.
The washed out colour serves to accent the redness of the blood during the very gory throat slashing scenes, and the bodies slide down from the barbers chair, and land on the stone floor below, with a sickening crunch and cracking of bones. The amount of claret should satisfy even the most jaded of gorehounds. I haven't seen so much blood since the bursting elevator doors in Kubricks "The Shining". Burton has given us a brilliantly over the top grand guignol movie. With London looking wonderfully gloomy, and all the characters getting more or less, their just desserts. I just can't wait to see it again. |

| I really wanted to like this film. I love Burton and Depp. And, I like Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall and Alan Rickman. But the music is very average and the film just is not scary. So as a musical it's not very good and as a horror film it's not very good either. The last 15 minutes are quite amusing but I was very disappointed in the whole thing. |
