Review by Admin:I'd had this film on DVD for ages, probably a couple of years. What an idiot! I should have watched it a long time ago. It's an absolute gem.
The film is about a man who discovers love and inspiration from a woman and her four children. Johnny Depp stars as J.M.Barrie who as we all know was the author of Peter Pan. Barrie is married to Mary (Radha Mitchell) and the couple are without children. Barrie, following a flopped theatre opening night (produced by Hoffman), spends most of his time, looking for inspiration in the park, and befriends Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Winslett) and most notably her four sons; Peter (Freddie Highmore), Jack (Joe Prospero), George (Nicholas Roud), and Michael (Luke Spill), which is highly frowned upon by Barrie's wife (Radha Mitchell) and Sylvia's "do what's proper" mother (Julie Christie). Barrie falls in love with Sylvia and whilst his relationship with the family blosoms his marriage starts to fall apart.
The performances are enchanting and Depp is utterly convincing, his Scottish accent being much better than his Bowie-esque English one. The child actors' contributions deserve special mention.
Delightful. |
