Was it worth the wait?.... does it live up to the hype?.... is it darker?.... is it funnier?.... and most importantly, is it any good? the simple answers are yes, yes, yes, yes and a resounding YES.
Things are decidedly darker in this adaptation of the penultimate novel. The attack on the Millennium bridge by the Death Eaters is a stunning start to the proceedings, the first attack by the dark forces of Voldemort on the "muggle" world.
To fit the story into a reasonable running time, there have been some pretty ruthless cuts, but the gist of the tale remains intact.
On the acting front Jim Broardbent is a terrific addition as Horace Slughorn and Alan Rickmans Severus Snape gets more sinister with each film, his splendid, slow, oozing delivery of his lines is brilliantly creepy. Of the youngsters, Emily Watson and Rupert Grint shine, but Daniel Radcliffe is just as adequate as ever. I wish someone would inform him that there is more to acting than speaking through clenched teeth. That aside, this is great storytelling. The rest of the cast are as good as ever and Michael Gambon is the best he's ever been in these particular films, and Tom Felton is also worth a mention as a wonderfully moody and mysterious Draco Malfoy.
The effects are pretty good, especially the aforementioned destruction of the Millennium Bridge.
It's a shame it had to end on such a bleak and abrupt note, but it certainly leaves the viewer chomping at the bit for the next two episodes. Next summer cant come soon enough
Yet another great addition to this tremendous series. |
